 Year 9 holocaust memorial day

Yesterday we were honoured to welcome Uri Winterstein BEM to KES to share his story as a Holocaust survivor as part of Year 9's Holocaust Memorial Day.

Born in Slovakia in 1943, Uri spoke to pupils about his family's plight during WWII. Nine members of his wider family were sent Auschwitzh-Birkenau, and Uri was just one month old when his parents put him in the care of a non-Jewish woman as they prepared to go into hiding. Uri was reunited with his family after the war and grew up in Brazil before settling in the UK.

Uri is pictured with the Headmaster and Mr Ford, Head of History and Politics at KES.

The annual Holocaust Memorial Day at KES involves a series of themed lessons around the Holocaust led by the History and RS departments.

This year's National Holocaust Memorial Day takes place on 27 January and marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia. This year's Memorial Day theme - For A Better Future - is designed to bring people together, learn from and about the past, and take action to make a better future for all.

We are very grateful to the Holocaust Educational Trust for helping to arrange Uri's visit to KES.
