Learning for life at kes
In a world where our pupils are increasingly being drawn towards polarised perspectives on social media, our Learning for Life programme, where pupils can discuss 'the grey', and develop well-informed opinions in a safe environment, is more relevant than ever.
Hannah Dawes, head of learning for life
The Learning for Life (PSHE) programme within our Senior School is designed with ambitious goals at its core. It aims to help pupils develop good character, make informed decisions, and cultivate the skills and qualities essential for success beyond school life. Curated by the Head of Learning for Life and delivered by Form Tutors within the academic curriculum, the fortnightly one-hour lessons are enriched by expert guest speakers and further supported during form time and assemblies.
As an integral part of a King Edward’s education, the Learning for Life programme adopts a student-focused approach, constantly evolving to meet their emerging needs. While each lesson may appear to stand alone, every session is designed to build on previous learning, creating a dynamic and cohesive spiral curriculum that begins in Year 7 and continues throughout a pupil’s time at KES.
The programme covers a wide range of topics, including digital citizenship, period poverty, TikTok privacy settings, voting procedures, the science of drugs, managing controlling relationships, and the distinctions between debit and credit cards, among others. By offering a curriculum that resonates with the contemporary needs of our pupils, we aim to foster their sense of well-being and self-worth, while encouraging them to form thoughtful, informed opinions about the world around them.
In addition to our pupil-focused programme, we also run parent talks in support of many of these topics.
