Adventures abroad thanks to the gilligan family travel award
Seven Sixth Form pupils have been selected for The Gilligan Family Travel Award this year, which include an eclectic array of global adventures: from animal welfare and street dog rescue projects in Sri Lanka to turtle conservation in Greece, from a Spanish language and cultural immersion course in Columbia to an epic mountain quest in Morocco.
More than 20 pupils submitted outstanding applications to nurture their intellectual and cultural curiosities and enrich their time during the summer holidays. Many pupils were inspired either by a wanderlust and sense of adventure - like the successful joint interrailing application to see much of Europe - a passion for a specific language or place, or inspired by more philanthropic motivations, especially those related to ecology and conservation.
Pupils were judged independently against a range of criteria, including the educational merit of the trip, the quality of the proposed travel and the cultural or learning experience, the financial outline and the presentation of the information. Consideration was also given to the extent of personal development to be gained through the proposed trip, whether recognised through Higher Education aspiration or a sense of professional passion or vocational calling.
Finally, but most importantly, an enormous thank you for the generosity of OEs, Jonathan and Philip Gilligan, who fund and support the Travel Award and make these extraordinary opportunities possible for KES pupils.
Bon voyage!
Mr Benedict, Head of Sixth Form
