Bookings have now closed for the touch type course.

The course will run from Tuesday 2nd April - Friday 5th April 2024

The world is moving forward with rapid improvements in the latest technology. The importance of computer skills is at an all-time high. One skill has become an ever-increasing attribute among pupils and in the workplace, the ability to touch type. Touch typing is the capacity to type using all your fingers, without looking at the keyboard. This a valuable skill for students because it enables them to produce and edit text at a much faster speed than usual. It also means that finished work has a greater level of accuracy. It means a better study experience, and more time available for other tasks. Furthermore, touch typing provides pupils with opportunities to improve their finger isolation, proprioceptive feedback from their muscles, bilateral co-ordination, and self-monitoring skills. Not only does it save pupils time, but also is the main form of written communication both at university and in most workplaces. Ideally this should be a skill mastered before the end of Year 10.

King Edward’s School Touch Typing Easter course requires pupils to commit to spending 4 hours a day sat at a pc, for 4 days. Each hour will be interspersed with an opportunity to go outside to get some fresh air and exercise. Learning to touch type in this intensive way is proven to be far more effective than spasmodic attempts to conquer the skill. Teachers will be on hand to guide, monitor and support the pupils for the entirety of the course. The Typequick Skill Evaluator will be administered at the start of the course. This is a quick, efficient, and convenient method of benchmarking keyboard skills before and after training. We offer two courses that will run concurrently, and we will need you to indicate on the application form which of the courses your child would prefer to do:

  • COURSE OPTION 1: Typequick for Students (11-14 years) @ £450

About the Courses

COURSE OPTION 1

Typequick for Students is a fun, interactive typing software for schools that is suitable for children from 11-14 years old. Pupils love the rich animation and characterisation in this learn to type software product. They are drawn into "Kewala's Amazing Keyboard Adventure" and forget they are learning how to touch type as they help the loveable cartoon character on his adventure in the Kingdom of Eaz. Ten easy and interesting lessons will teach pupils to learn to touch type with 10 fingers - an essential skill in education today. Pupils can extend and consolidate their keyboarding expertise with five additional courses to increase speed, accuracy, keypad and punctuation typing skills.

COST: £450 FOR THE FOUR DAY COURSE, PER PERSON, 10AM - 4PM

Course option 2

Typequick Professional is a comprehensive typing tutor, featuring ten easy and interesting lessons to learn to type. This is a more no-nonsense approach which relies on the motivation of the pupils to beat their own targets and reach each milestone. Once the basics are accomplished you can then extend and consolidate your keyboarding expertise with five additional courses to increase your speed, accuracy, keypad and punctuation typing skills. (Recommended for 12+ years)

COST: £450 FOR THE FOUR DAY COURSE, PER PERSON, 10AM - 4PM

Whichever programme you choose for your child they will retain their login to the Typing tutor for a full year from the start of the course. This can then be accessed through an internet connection on any keyboard device at home (or on the move!). In this way pupils can continue to improve their speed and accuracy in their own time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I qualify for bursary assistance?

There is no definitive income level at which bursaries are awarded. The level of award determined is based on assessment of a family’s financial circumstances, including their income, assets, liabilities, major outgoings, the size of their family and any other persons dependent on them. Where there is over-subscription, awards will take into account an applicant’s academic performance and potential and their ability to make contributions to the wider life of the School.

All assessments and awards are determined jointly by the Headmaster and Bursar, and decisions are communicated at the same time as the offer of a place at the School.

How do I apply for a bursary?
When completing the online application form for a school place, please select ‘I would like to apply for a bursary’. You will then be sent a bursary application form along with guidance on how to complete the bursary form.
Is the bursary award maintained throughout a pupil’s time at the School?
All bursaries are subject to annual review and may be varied up or down if parents’ financial circumstances alter, but this will always be done in discussion and consultation with parents. Whilst the School endeavours to increase the bursary award proportionately in line with year-on-year fee increases, this is dependent on the School’s financial circumstances and therefore cannot be guaranteed.
If I am in receipt of a bursary, can I also get help with other school costs?
In addition to providing financial support in relation to fees, the School may also be able to provide further assistance to bursary recipients towards meeting other costs such as lunches, purchasing uniform or certain school trips.
What is the deadline for applying for a bursary for 2025 entry?

Unfortunately, we cannot accept applications for bursaries after the main school applications have closed. The bursary application deadlines for 2025 entry are:

  • Year 12 - 25 October 2024
  • Year 7 (King Edward’s Junior School) - 25 October 2024
  • Year 7 (External applicants) - 25 November 2024
Do you offer bursaries for entry into Junior School or Years 8, 9 and 10?
At present, means-tested bursary awards are restricted to pupils joining Year 7 and Year 12 only.
