KING EDWARD’S SCHOOL - EXAM POLICY

King Edward’s is an academically selective school. We believe very strongly in striving for academic excellence and aim for every pupil to achieve the very best results they can while benefiting from a broad syllabus of subjects and a wide programme of supra-curricular activities.

All of our pupils in the Sixth Form are encouraged to start with four A Level subjects, while most are expected to be examined in their strongest/preferred three. Some of our exceptional pupils, and particularly those studying Further Maths, will continue all four subjects to final examination. A few of our pupils will be sufficiently focused on their preferred subjects that they are allowed to specialise in those three early in Year 12. The majority of our pupils study four subjects with equal weighting until the end of Year 12 and choose to intensify their studies on their top three sometime in the beginning of Year 13.

See below for further details and also information regarding our Year 11 policies.

YEAR 13 A LEVEL EXAMS

To gain entrance to KES Sixth Form, pupils are required to have an equivalent average of grade 6s at GCSE level. They are normally expected to have excelled in their chosen, or related A Level subjects. Exceptions are made if extenuating circumstances apply.

Pupils are expected to select four A Level subjects unless otherwise arranged. Pupils are allowed to specialise in three subjects in time for the final exams in Year 13. There are established points in the academic calendar at which point pupils can opt to drop a subject – most are encouraged to continue with four until at least the end of Year 12.

All subjects are examined at the end of Year 12 by means of an internally set, marked and moderated test equivalent to A Level standard, not AS, and based on Year 12 material. We do not allow pupils to sit the reformed AS level, with the exception of Electronics, which is only offered at this level.
Pupils are offered the opportunity to study for an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) but this is not a standard part of our provision and no formal teaching or curriculum time is devoted to it, making it more akin to an independent dissertation .

Please note, we do not certificate any qualifications until the end of Year 13. Official school-certified results are available on request.
